PROJECT 1: Evaluation of the effect of salt on natural product production in fungi
The "Salt Project" aims to assess the effect of NaCl in culture media on natural product production. Each consortium member will conduct the same set of experiments using a standardized protocol with their own isolates of selected fungal taxa plus a reference strain given to all members. Thus, fungi from a wide variety of geographic locations and habitats will be assessed thus allowing for general conclusions to be drawn. By analysis of the results of the reference strain, the inherent variablility in a basic fermentation protocol among different labs will be assessed. A graduate student, post-doc, or PI at each research group will coordinate the experimental work and report to MAFNAP PIs.
